The tech startup boom shows no sign of slowing, especially with the advent of AI becoming accessible to everyday entrepreneurs. What you might not know is that Los Angeles is now the third-largest startup market in the US, centred around what is known as Silicon Beach on the Westside. A lot of this can be attributed to the economy in the city itself: LA has the third-largest GDP in the world, in excess of $1 trillion. So what are the key reasons why LA continues to go from strength-to-strength and flourish as a go-to city in the United States?
The basis of any successful city is its industry, and with Los Angeles becoming such a growing hub for startups, the true foundation of its rise is in its esteemed universities. Over 1.5m people in LA hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher. When most people think of a startup business, they immediately think of the technology industry, and this is where education in Los Angeles really stands head and shoulders above almost any other city in the world.
Caltech is renowned as the best technological university in the United States, a status that has been boosted globally by the success of the popular TV sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, bringing more awareness to the esteem of the university internationally. The university has, so far, been affiliated with 80 different Nobel laureates, and it also boasts a specific startup support hub within its walls. The Office of Technology Transfer & Corporate Partnerships at Caltech has helped companies such as Photon etc., Quora and Impinj emerge from its university students to great success.
There are also success stories seen from both UCLA and USC too. Both universities are as well known for their athletic prowess as they are for their Nobel laureates. The sporting prowess from these two universities has brought, to-date, a combined total of 606 Olympic medals home, with UCLA providing a gold medal from every Olympics in which the United States has participated since 1932 and USC having won more Olympic medals than any other US university, a total of 336 as it stands. These two schools hold a fierce sporting rivalry, with one or the other being the top team in the nation in many sports in which they compete. In NCAA team championships, only Stanford is above the two LA schools (135) where UCLA has 123 and USC has 113.

Pepperdine college is also valuable to the LA area, founded by Christian philanthropist George Pepperdine in 1937 in South Los Angeles. These days, it is based in Malibu and has been threatened by wildfires as recently as 2018 and 2024. Actress Nicole Kidman and former world number 4 tennis player Brad Gilbert are notable alumni.
Where there is education success, and innovation from the top schools, there are investors. What makes Los Angeles special in this regard is that there is a strong network of private investors in the city, drawn to the area because of its large culture of entrepreneurship. Whether a startup is looking for a venture capital firm or an angel investor, both are prevalent in the city. These investors aren’t solely looking for fintech firms either, some such as Amplify.LA - who are based in Venice, CA - also invest in sectors like Real Estate and Food Tech too.
Something that marks the city out as unique for investment is that capital is available from the earliest pre-seed ideas stage, right through to Series B growth rounds, and this type of funding is available to such a broad spectrum of business sectors too. Consumer brands and media are as well supported as AI, fintech and SaaS platforms.
We can’t talk about investors in LA and not talk about Space, either. From SpaceX and Relativity Space to JPL and Anduirl, there are so many opportunities in the aerospace industry in Los Angeles which are consistently being backed by investors and firms. California is absolutely at the cutting-edge of innovation in this area, and investors are responding in kind, which is something Mark Suster spoke about recently with Ian Cinnamon.
Even as far back as 1989, the Los Angeles Times was referring to the city as a melting pot. In 2004, NPR published a news report from the city entitled “Inside the Melting Pot of L.A. County”, during which it lists Spanish, Navajo, Chinese, and Hindi as languages spoken, outlines that 150,000 Armenians live there and over 45% of the local residents are of Latino ethnicities. Local furnishings business Valley Drapery & Upholstery posted in 2021 that the melting pot of LA has brought such diversity in cultures, talent and styles, that their designers and artisans are able to bring beauty to each piece created for their clients.
It is in this mix of cultural styles and traditions that the magic is made, and in which Los Angeles thrives. People come together in this city, bringing their individual ideas and creating a product that represents many. This diversity of people, and the way that these relationships are built, is what has helped create community. Community is especially clear in the tech startup scene that LA is becoming well-known for. A serial entrepreneur, Brian Lee, outlined to Startups Magazine in March 2023 that Los Angeles is all about hustling and building relationships, which helped him get celebrities to endorse his products.
We live in an age where influencers hold power over people’s buying habits, and celebrity endorsements are an essential aid to reach broader and newer audiences. So if the culture of building relationships is so evident in Los Angeles, it is natural that even the well-known residents of the city would be happy to get onboard and support people just like themselves, thriving in the cultural melting pot offered on their doorstep.
With all of these factors, it becomes simple to understand why Los Angeles has suddenly become the go-to place for young people and entrepreneurs. It’s no longer just for the super rich and the celebrity lifestyle. Why would you look elsewhere after completing a degree in LA? With the tech boom arriving here too, you no longer need to go to the San Francisco Bay Area to find success in technology. Aside from startups, the food scene - from street food to Michelin stars - and a climate compared to the Mediterranean bring endless opportunity and excitement to everyday lifestyles.
